February in Houston: The Heart of Texas in Low Season
For Francophone expatriates settled in Houston, February is a month of transition. While temperatures are much milder than in New York (with an average of about 9°C to 19°C), the weather can change completely, ranging from spring sunshine to frosty nights (and, very rarely, snow!).
It’s a fantastic time to explore the museums, enjoy the city’s technological and industrial culture, and prepare for the Texan event of the year: the Rodeo.
Culture & Discovery: The Indoors and the Underground
February is the perfect time to explore what makes Houston rich, often sheltered from the whims of the weather.
1. Space is Always Hot: Space Center Houston
-
The Space Center: An essential visit! Space Center Houston, the official visitor center for the NASA Johnson Space Center, offers over 400 space artifacts. It’s an immersion into the history of the American space conquest, ideal for a February day.
2. The Downtown Tunnel System
-
Stay warm and dry: Houston has a network of air-conditioned underground tunnels connecting many Downtown buildings. For the expatriate, it’s the perfect place to walk around, have lunch (many restaurants and food courts are located there), and run errands without going outside on the coldest or rainiest days. Guided tours are often offered.
3. Museum District
Houston is rich in world-class museums (The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Museum of Natural Science). February, with its lower tourist traffic, is the opportunity to visit them consecutively without being rushed.
Event : Preparing for Spring
February is the month when anticipation for Houston’s great event rises: the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (often straddling February and March).
1. The World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest
-
Pre-Rodeo: This BBQ contest usually takes place just before the official start of the Rodeo. It’s a complete immersion in Texan culture: smoke, grilled meat, country music, and a friendly atmosphere. An excellent way to become familiar with local traditions.
2. Trade Shows and Conferences (The International City)
Houston, the capital of energy and technology, hosts many international conferences in February.
-
Exhibitions: Major events like the Houston Auto Show (often late January/early February) or trade shows related to the energy and technology sector take place at the NRG Center. These events are perfect for networking or simply discovering the latest innovations.
3. Valentine’s Day and Local Festivities
-
Black History Month: February is Black History Month. Look for special events, exhibitions, or historical tours (such as those offered by The Heritage Society) that highlight African American contributions to Houston’s history.
-
Tapas on the Trails: Certain culinary and outdoor events may be organized around Valentine’s Day, taking advantage of the days when the weather is mild (for example, events at the Houston Arboretum).
Expat Tips: Thriving in the Texan Winter
-
The Layer System: Houston weather is capricious. It can be 10°C in the morning and 25°C in the afternoon. The trick is to dress in layers (layering) to adapt easily.
-
Hot/Cold: Take advantage of Houston’s many parks (Buffalo Bayou Park, Memorial Park) on sunny days (the climate is ideal for hiking or biking) and save the rainy days for museums or indoor attractions.
-
Taste Texan Comfort: February is the time to savor heavy and comforting local dishes: a good Texan Steak, a steaming Chili, or a Gumbo (a nod to the proximity to Louisiana).
February in Houston is the opportunity to integrate into local life and enjoy Texan culture at your own pace, without the climatic extremes of summer or the Northern winter.
