What are the seasonal fruits and vegetables in Montreal

30 January 2026

In Montreal, the seasons are very distinct, which heavily influences local harvests. Winter is long, but when the warmer days return, Quebec markets turn into true festivals of colors. For French expatriates, knowing the seasonality is essential for enjoying fresh, flavorful, and affordable produce.

In spring (May to June), the first asparagus arrives, followed by radishes, spinach, lettuce, fresh herbs, and the famous Quebec strawberries. It is a short but cheerful period after the winter.

In summer (July to September), there is total abundance: tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet corn, peppers, eggplants, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, Ontario peaches, melons, and plums. This is the best season for fresh and varied cooking.

In autumn (September to November), it’s time for apples, pears, grapes, pumpkins, squash, carrots, beets, cabbage, and sweet potatoes. The markets are full of produce perfect for comforting recipes.

In winter (December to March), local production decreases, but some vegetables store very well: potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, and winter squash. You also find many imports, which helps maintain a good diversity.

Eating seasonally in Montreal means discovering the agricultural richness of Quebec, enjoying incomparable quality, and adapting to the unique rhythm of the Canadian climate — a great way to anchor your expatriate life in the local region.
