What are the seasonal fruits and vegetables in Toronto

Like in Montreal, the seasons in Toronto are very distinct. Winters are cold, but as soon as the temperatures rise, local markets fill up with fresh produce from Ontario farms. For French expatriates, knowing the seasonality allows them to consume more local, flavorful, and economical products.

In spring (May to June), the first harvests appear: asparagus, radishes, lettuce, spinach, fresh herbs, and rhubarb. Local strawberries arrive a little later, marking the start of the warm season.

In summer (July to September), it’s a time of abundance: tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet corn, peppers, eggplants, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, peaches, apricots, and melons. Ontario is renowned for the quality of its summer fruits.

In autumn (September to November), it’s time for apples (very common in the region), pears, plums, cabbage, pumpkins, squash, carrots, and beets. This is the season of warm colors and comforting recipes.

In winter (December to March), the variety diminishes, but some vegetables store very well: potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, winter squash, and parsnips. Many imported products supplement the markets.

Eating seasonally in Toronto means enjoying the agricultural richness of Ontario, supporting local producers, and fully integrating the North American rhythm into your daily life as an expatriate.
