What to Do the Day Before Going Back to School?
The day before going back to school often marks the end of the holidays and the return to routine. Whether you are going back to work, your children are returning to school, or you simply want to start fresh, this day is the perfect opportunity to slow down… while preparing for the days ahead.
There is no need to spend the day stressing or running around in every direction. By dedicating just an hour or two to a few simple tasks, you can approach this new period with a lighter mind.
Here is our back-to-school eve checklist.
1. Prepare your outfit and your bag
Start by removing small sources of stress from the next morning.
Choose your outfit, prepare your bag, make sure your computer is charged, and pack your notebook, headphones, keys, or water bottle. If you are a parent, take a moment to check that everything is ready for your children as well.
The next day, you will only have to get going.
2. Take a quick look at your schedule
Spend ten minutes reviewing your week ahead.
Identify your appointments, working hours, travel plans, or important tasks you do not want to forget. You can even write down your three main priorities for the week in a notebook.
Having an overview helps you get back into the rhythm without feeling overwhelmed from the very first day.
3. Give your home a quick reset
There is no need to do a deep clean.
Simply tidy up the spaces where you spend the most time: your office, bedroom, or entrance area. Change your sheets, empty the bins, open the windows for a few minutes, and bring some order back into your space.
A clean and organized environment immediately creates a feeling of a fresh start.
4. Go for a walk and get some fresh air
Before your schedule gets busy again, give yourself thirty minutes outside.
Take a walk around your neighborhood, by the water, in a park, or simply enjoy the sunset.
This break helps reduce stress and allows you to gently close the holiday chapter.
5. Prepare your breakfast or lunch
The first mornings of September are often busy.
Prepare your breakfast in advance or make your lunch for the next day. Cut some fruit, prepare overnight oats, set up your coffee machine, or pack a lunch box.
You will save valuable time in the morning.
6. Take a real moment for yourself
Going back to school or work does not mean you have to jump straight back into a fast-paced routine.
Give yourself a moment of self-care: run a bath, apply a face mask, take a long shower, do some stretching, or enjoy a self-massage.
These small rituals help release tension and end the holidays on a peaceful note.
7. Write down three things you want to do in September
Instead of making a long list of resolutions, simply write down three things you would like to experience or put into place this month.
For example:
- start exercising again;
- discover a new café near your home;
- make more time for reading.
These small intentions are often more motivating than overly ambitious goals.
8. End the day with your favorite meal
The night before going back deserves to be enjoyable too.
Prepare your favorite dish or order your go-to meal, get comfortable under a blanket, and watch an episode of your current favorite series or a movie you love.
The goal is to end the holidays on a positive note, without guilt, before gradually returning to your everyday routine.
A successful return to routine often starts… the day before
We often think that everything depends on the first morning. Yet it is the small things done the day before that often make the biggest difference.
By taking the time to get organized while also allowing yourself moments of relaxation, you can start this new chapter with more calm and energy.
After all, going back to school or work is not just about returning to routine: it is also an opportunity to start fresh and move forward at your own pace.
